L- and T-drilling: What is the difference?
The core component of a 3-way ball valve is the bore in the ball. Two variants are available depending on requirements: L-bore and T-bore. With the L-bore, two of the three connections are always connected, while one remains closed – this allows flows to be easily diverted or distributed. The T-bore, on the other hand, can connect all three passages simultaneously (for mixing) or connect the middle port to both sides, perfect for distribution. The current position can be seen directly on the hand lever or a built-in position indicator.
Material, connection and drive
Fergo supplies 3-way ball valves made from high-quality materials, depending on the area of application. Stainless steel models are required for aggressive media, high temperatures or where hygiene is important. For classic applications with water, air or neutral gases, brass is usually sufficient – a more economical, proven option. Connections are available from female threads in all common inch sizes (approximately 1/4" to 2 1/2") to sturdy flanges according to DIN or ANSI (DN15 to DN100).
There is also a choice when it comes to operation: manual valves can be turned simply by hand, while pneumatic models – connected to compressed air – switch particularly quickly and reliably, for example in industry. Electric 3-way ball valves can be integrated directly into control systems and run on 24V DC or 230V AC.
Areas of application and personal advice
Thanks to their versatility, 3-way ball valves are used in a wide variety of industries. Typical applications include the process industry, mobile hydraulics (e.g. in construction machinery), air conditioning technology (HVAC) and water and chemical engineering systems. Whether you need to distribute refrigerants, change pipes or mix liquids, Fergo offers the right solutions.
The most suitable 3-way ball valve depends on the medium, operating conditions, bore (L or T), material, connection type and actuation type. Our experts will be happy to help you with your selection. Simply contact us or order directly from our online shop.
