S-Plug vs V-Plug in Plug Valves – Which Design Offers Better Flow Control and Performance?
The difference between the S-plug and V-plug in plug valves lies primarily in the geometry of the flow passage and the resulting flow characteristics.
The V-plug features a V-shaped port that allows for precise flow control and throttling capability. When the valve begins to open, the narrow part of the “V” opens first, allowing a gradual increase in flow. This design provides a linear flow characteristic, ideal for applications requiring accurate flow regulation, such as in steam, gas, or clean fluid systems. Because of the higher velocities in the narrow section, V-plugs are best suited for clean, non-abrasive media where erosion is minimal.
The S-plug, by contrast, has an S-shaped flow channel that offers a smoother, more uniform flow. This design reduces turbulence and pressure loss, making it ideal for on/off operations and media with solids, viscosity, or abrasiveness. It prevents buildup and minimises wear, ensuring longer service life and reliability.
In summary, V-plug plug valves are preferred for precise control applications, while S-plug plug valves are ideal for robust, full-bore applications with challenging media. Fergo offers both types, customizable in materials, port sizes, and actuation options, ensuring durability and performance in industrial pipelines across Germany, Austria, Switzerland, France, Poland, Belgium and whole Europe.
