J4C electric actuator — four variants for every requirement
Every electric ball valve in the Fergo range is powered by a J4C rotary electric actuator from J&J. The product listing above shows the standard J4C variant pre-assembled on the ball valve. However, Fergo offers the complete J4C family — any variant can be assembled on any ball valve in the catalogue:
| J4C variant | Function | Use case |
|---|---|---|
| Standard | on/off switching, multi-voltage 24–240 V | building automation, HVAC, water systems |
| BSR (Battery Spring Return) | fail-safe on power loss — battery drives valve to defined NC or NO position | safety valves, emergency shutdown, critical processes |
| Positioner | proportional control via 0–10 V or 4–20 mA signal — positions ball anywhere between 0° and 90° | modulating control, temperature regulation, flow dosing |
| BSR + Positioner | proportional control with battery fail-safe backup | critical process control with safety requirement |
All four J4C variants share the same multi-voltage input (24–240 V AC/DC), the same ISO 5211 mounting flange and the same compact housing. The BSR version replaces the spring-return pneumatic actuator — it delivers fail-safe ball valve positioning without compressed air. The positioner version replaces the electropneumatic positioner — it provides modulating ball position control with a simple analogue signal. Electric ball valve vs. pneumatic ball valve
| Feature | Electric ball valve (J4C) | Pneumatic ball valve |
|---|---|---|
| Power source | electricity (24–240 V) | compressed air (5–8 bar) |
| Infrastructure | power cable only — no compressor | air supply + solenoid valve |
| Switching speed | 9–13 seconds | under 1 second |
| Modulating control | yes (J4C Positioner: 0–10 V / 4–20 mA) | only with electropneumatic positioner |
| Fail-safe | J4C BSR battery backup (NC/NO) | spring-return actuator (NC/NO) |
| Best for | remote sites, HVAC, water, no air supply | fast cycling, Ex zones, existing air supply |
Choose the motorised ball valve when no compressed air is available, when modulating position control is needed, or when a simple cable connection is preferred. Choose the pneumatic ball valve when switching speed under one second is required or when an existing air supply is already in place.
Applications — water, HVAC, chemicals, pharma and building automation
The electric ball valve suits any application requiring remote or automated shut-off without compressed air. In drinking water and gas networks, DVGW-certified motorised ball valves in brass or stainless steel provide automated zone isolation and backflow prevention. In HVAC, heating and solar thermal systems, electric shut-off ball valves control flow on headers, return lines and buffer circuits — the J4C Positioner variant enables proportional temperature control. In the chemical and pharmaceutical industry, stainless steel electrically operated ball valves with TA Luft and ATEX certification isolate process media. In building automation, motor-driven ball valves integrate into BMS via 0–10 V or 4–20 mA. For critical installations requiring fail-safe on power loss, the J4C BSR variant drives the automated electric ball valve to a defined safety position without external power.
