What is a disco check valve?
A disco check valve is a backflow preventer in wafer (lug-less) design. A spring-loaded disc inside the body opens under media pressure and closes automatically when flow ceases. The spring ensures fast closure without water hammer. This design is also known as a disc check valve, single-plate check valve or wafer check valve. The face-to-face length to EN 558-1 Series 49 is significantly shorter than a conventional flanged check valve. This saves installation space, weight and cost.
Check valve stainless steel — RV100, RV108 and RV110 ranges
Fergo stocks three in-house disco check valve ranges in stainless steel:
- RV100: standard version, body and disc in stainless steel 1.4408, spring in 1.4436, metallic seat, DN15–DN200, PN6–PN40
- RV108: compact version, body, disc and spring in SS316/CF8M, metallic seat, DN15–DN200, PN16/40 and ANSI 150, operating temperature −20 °C to +200 °C
- RV110: safety version with 4 earthing lugs, body and disc in 1.4408/1.4581, spring in 1.4571, seat in metallic/EPDM/NBR/FKM/PTFE selectable, PN6–PN40 and ANSI 150/300, operating pressure up to 40 bar
All three ranges are wafer check valves to EN 558-1 Series 49. For high-pressure service up to PN160 (ANSI 600/900) Series 52 is available.

GESTRA check valves — RK76, RK44 and RK86
Alongside its own ranges, Fergo stocks GESTRA check valves as wafer check valves. GESTRA (Endress+Hauser) is an established manufacturer of steam and condensate valves. The RK76, RK44 and RK86 models complement the range with specialist variants for steam, condensate and high-pressure duty. The GESTRA series is widely specified in process plants, power generation and chemical engineering.
Wafer check valve — technical data
All disco check valves follow a uniform wafer construction. Key specifications:
- Nominal size: DN15 to DN200 (1/2" to 8")
- Pressure rating: PN6, PN10, PN16, PN25, PN40 (standard), PN63, PN100, PN160 (high pressure)
- ANSI classes: Class 150, Class 300, Class 600, Class 900
- Body: stainless steel 1.4408 (CF8M) or zinc-plated carbon steel 1.0619
- Disc: stainless steel 1.4408
- Spring: stainless steel 1.4571 or 1.4436
- Seat seal: metallic, EPDM, NBR, FKM (Viton) or PTFE
- Face-to-face: EN 558-1 Series 49 (standard), Series 52 (high pressure)
- Temperature range: −20 °C to +200 °C (depending on seal material)
- Conformity:EU Pressure Equipment Directive 2014/68/EU
Seal material — metallic, EPDM, NBR, FKM or PTFE
The seal material determines operating temperature and media compatibility of the wafer check valve:
- Metallic: highest temperature resistance (up to +200 °C), suitable for steam, hot water, thermal oil, gases — no bubble-tight shut-off, but long-lasting and low maintenance
- EPDM: water, air, dilute acids and alkalis, −20 °C to +120 °C — standard choice for water treatment and HVAC
- NBR: mineral oils, fuels, hydraulic fluids, −20 °C to +80 °C
- FKM (Viton): aggressive chemicals, fuels, high temperatures up to +150 °C
- PTFE: universal chemical resistance, food industry, −20 °C to +150 °C

Disco check valve vs. swing check valve vs. flanged check valve
| Feature | Disco check valve | Swing check valve | Flanged check valve |
|---|---|---|---|
| Design | wafer (between flanges) | wafer (between flanges) | full-flanged body |
| Closure element | spring-loaded disc | hinged disc (with/without spring) | piston or ball |
| Closing speed | very fast, no water hammer | fast (dual-plate) to medium | slow, water hammer possible |
| Mounting | any position (including vertical) | horizontal preferred | horizontal or vertical |
| Pressure rating | up to PN160 / ANSI 900 | up to PN40 | up to PN40 (standard) |
| Nominal size | DN15–DN200 | DN50–DN600+ | DN15–DN300 |
A disco check valve is the most compact and fastest solution for small to medium nominal sizes. For larger lines from DN250 we recommend swing check valves or dual-plate check valves.
Applications — chemicals, steam, HVAC, oil and gas
A wafer check valve in stainless steel suits a wide range of industrial applications. In the chemical and petrochemical industry, a check valve stainless steel with FKM or PTFE seat protects metering systems and reactors from backflow. In steam and condensate systems, metallic-seated disco check valves secure the line downstream of steam traps. In HVAC systems, EPDM-seated models prevent backflow in heating and cooling circuits. In oil and gas installations, high-pressure versions up to PN160 withstand process pressure. In the food industry, PTFE-seated variants provide hygienic backflow protection.

FAQ – Your questions, our answers!
A disc check valve is a non-return valve designed for installation between two flanges (wafer type). A spring-loaded disc inside the valve opens only in the flow direction and closes immediately when the flow decreases or threatens to reverse, thereby preventing backflow.
Spring-loaded means the valve disc is actively held closed by a spring. This enables very fast and secure sealing, independent of the installation position, and ensures reliable operation even at very low differential pressures.
Both the RV108 and RV110 are high-quality disc check valves. A key distinguishing feature of the RV110 is its four grounding lugs, which provide an additional safety function. The RV110 can also typically be configured for a wider range of pressure ratings.
These valves are particularly well-suited for clean liquids and gases. For media containing solids or with a high tendency for fouling, other designs, such as swing check valves, can sometimes be the better choice.
