Rubber expansion joints must not be axially pre-stressed or twisted during installation, as they are designed to absorb operating movements and are not intended to compensate for assembly stresses. The pipeline must be equipped with anchor points and pipe guides so that the expansion joint absorbs movements in a controlled manner. At larger nominal sizes and higher operating pressures, tie rods are required to protect the compensator against axial over-extension caused by internal pressure, and the compensator should also be shielded from direct UV radiation and ozone sources.
