Compensator
A pipe compensator – also known as an expansion joint, flexible joint, or rubber expansion joint – is a flexible pipeline element installed between two fixed pipe sections to absorb axial, lateral, and angular movements caused by thermal expansion and contraction. At the same time, a rubber expansion joint acoustically decouples pumps and machines from the pipe network, preventing the transmission of vibrations and structure-borne noise into the building structure. Fergo supplies rubber expansion joints from DN25 to DN500 with flanged connections PN10/16 as well as socket versions for particularly fast and straightforward installation.
A rubber expansion joint consists of a pure elastomeric body with fabric reinforcement and provides excellent vibration damping at low to medium operating pressures up to PN16. The rubber-metal pipe connector combines a rubber body with integrated metal reinforcements, achieving higher pressure resistance and better dimensional stability under operating pressure. It is the right choice for industrial pipelines and pump stations that require both flexibility and increased mechanical strength simultaneously.
The choice of material depends directly on the medium being conveyed and the operating temperature.
EPDM is the first choice for rubber expansion joints in heating, HVAC, and drinking water systems, as it is resistant to water, hot water, and dilute acids up to approximately 150 °C.
NBR is suited to oil-containing media such as fuels and mineral oils and is preferred in the oil and gas industry, while Neoprene represents a reliable all-round option for general industrial applications and seawater systems.
Fergo stocks rubber expansion joints from DN25 to DN500, covering both small building installations and large industrial pipelines. Standard versions are rated for PN10 and PN16, meeting the most common requirements in heating, air conditioning, cooling water, and water supply systems. Both flanged connections to EN 1092-1 and socket connections are available, allowing flexible and quick installation in the pipeline.
Rubber expansion joints must not be axially pre-stressed or twisted during installation, as they are designed to absorb operating movements and are not intended to compensate for assembly stresses. The pipeline must be equipped with anchor points and pipe guides so that the expansion joint absorbs movements in a controlled manner. At larger nominal sizes and higher operating pressures, tie rods are required to protect the compensator against axial over-extension caused by internal pressure, and the compensator should also be shielded from direct UV radiation and ozone sources.
The installation length refers to the face-to-face length of the compensator when installed. It is a critical dimension for mounting the unit in your pipeline. The page mainly offers models with installation lengths of 130mm (Type OG130) and 150mm (Type OG150).
Rubber expansion joints for pipelines are found in heating and HVAC systems for vibration isolation of circulating pumps, in water supply networks and sewage treatment plants, in industrial process pipelines in the chemical and food industries, and in shipbuilding and offshore applications where rubber-metal pipe connectors are preferred for their high mechanical robustness. They are equally indispensable in building services to reduce pump noise and pipe vibrations in residential and commercial buildings to a minimum. The elastomer material – EPDM for water and heating, NBR for oil and gas – is selected according to the medium and operating temperature.
