How do I know if a steam trap has failed?
A failed steam trap causes either energy loss through steam blow-through or water hammer from backed-up condensate. Key warning signs:
- Steam blow-through (trap fails open): increased steam consumption, abnormally hot condensate return lines, rising temperatures in return pipework
- No discharge (trap fails closed): risk of water hammer, reduced heat transfer efficiency, corrosion in heat exchangers and downstream equipment
- Diagnosis methods: ultrasonic testing, temperature measurement, or visual inspection via a downstream sight glass
