GESTRA Steam trap
A steam trap is a self-acting device installed in steam systems that automatically discharges condensate, air, and other non-condensable gases — without allowing live steam to escape. It protects pipelines, heat exchangers, turbines, and process plant from water hammer, corrosion, and energy loss. Fergo stocks GESTRA steam traps from the BK, MK, and UNA series for immediate dispatch.
Fergo supplies the following GESTRA steam trap series from stock:
- BK Series (Bimetallic Steam Traps) – for low-pressure steam, trace heating, and return lines; robust bimetallic design, low maintenance requirement
- MK Series (Float Steam Traps) – for continuous condensate discharge at medium to high pressure; high capacity, minimal steam loss
- UNA Series (Thermodynamic Steam Traps) – compact disc design for high-pressure steam up to 250 bar; suitable for superheated steam and process steam lines
The right series depends on operating pressure, condensate load, and installation conditions. Our team is happy to advise — contact us.
The three main operating principles of GESTRA steam traps explained:
- Bimetallic (BK Series) – opens and closes based on temperature via a bimetallic element; well suited to trace heating, low-pressure systems, and cold-start conditions
- Float (MK Series) – mechanically controlled float opens as the condensate level rises; enables continuous discharge without steam loss, ideal for steady condensate loads
- Thermodynamic (UNA Series) – disc responds to the pressure differential between condensate and steam; compact, robust, and rated for very high pressures up to 250 bar
GESTRA steam traps cover a wide operating range:
- BK Series: up to approx. 25 bar, temperatures to +220 °C – ideal for low- and medium-pressure systems
- MK Series: up to approx. 40 bar, temperatures to +250 °C – for medium to high steam pressures
- UNA Series: up to 250 bar, temperatures to +400 °C – for high-pressure and superheated steam systems

A failed steam trap causes either energy loss through steam blow-through or water hammer from backed-up condensate. Key warning signs:
- Steam blow-through (trap fails open): increased steam consumption, abnormally hot condensate return lines, rising temperatures in return pipework
- No discharge (trap fails closed): risk of water hammer, reduced heat transfer efficiency, corrosion in heat exchangers and downstream equipment
- Diagnosis methods: ultrasonic testing, temperature measurement, or visual inspection via a downstream sight glass
